The Ottawa Hospital — Continuity by Design
Resilience engineering for post-earthquake operational continuity in critical healthcare facilities
critical healthcare facility | functional continuity | post-earthquake performance | resilience design support
Kinetica Risk supported the design team for a major healthcare facility in Ottawa with analysis focused on operational continuity following earthquake events. For critical healthcare infrastructure, code-compliant design alone does not guarantee that medical functions can continue after a damaging event, especially when multiple building systems and contents must work together to sustain care delivery.
The work evaluated continuity performance at the building and functional level using the ATC-138 methodology, customized to reflect design intent, to help identify the scenarios most likely to interrupt operations and most effective paths to improve resilience. This provided the owner and project team with a more holistic basis for aligning design choices with continuity objectives.
